A fabulous monumental antique silver plated lidded tankard, by the well known silversmith, Elkington, circa 1870.
Excellent quality, made of silver on copper, with wonderful embossed and engraved decoration depicting various Greek Gods, with anthemion, leaf, berry and floral banding. It bears the makers mark for Elkington on the underside, the cooper is showing through the plating.
Elkington & Co was a silver manufacturer from Birmingham, UK.
