A rare late 19th century combined silver Letter Scale & Stamp Case / Box made in the form of a Maltese cross shaped envelope, opening to a single postage stamp compartment. The front showing weights and rates in ounces and pence. With sprung letter clip and attached suspension ring.
Made by James Allen Birmingham, c1888. Stamped with registered design no: 112078.
Allen manufactured these in solid silver and brass, and in three different shapes with three different registered design numbers (all registered in 1888). This is the first one that I have seen in sterling silver of this Maltese cross shape.
